[T]he family…is the foundation of society. -Gaudium et Spes, 52
Families are the foundation of a strong community. If we want to have robust and healthy communities, we need to have healthy and stable families. Family therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the relationships between family members. It is common for families with young adults or adolescents to seek help. A parish can be thought of as a “family of families.” The family is considered to be a domestic church.
Common family issues include parenting difficulties, marital stress impacting children, and significant events such as the birth of a new child or the transition of children entering college or young adulthood. Modern issues such as same-sex attractions and gender dysphoria can also affect good Catholic families, causing stress and tension. Families might also suffer due to grief, tragedy, or addiction, which can be devastating and threaten their strength.
A compassionate and skilled therapist can provide intervention to help families improve communication and relationships and learn forgiveness.
