Staff and Family

Psychologist Dr. Kenneth Buckle, Psy.D. is the Founder and President of Gratia Plena. He is a native Houstonian and is licensed to practice Psychology in Texas.  Dr. Ken obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.  He then completed his graduate studies in the Chicago area.  His Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology was from Wheaton College, where he studied and learned about the integration of Christian faith with psychotherapy.  There he trained under Dr. David Benner, noted author, therapist, and spiritual guide.  Ken’s Doctor of Psychology degree was also in Clinical Psychology.  While pursuing his doctoral degree, he received the Aaron T. Beck Psychotherapy award based on his dissertation work.  While at the University of St. Thomas, he was a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and he was recognized as UST’s “Outstanding Psychology Student” in 1983.

Dr. Ken’s career as a psychotherapist which dates back to 1985 has had a special emphasis on identifying and treating compulsive behaviors in adults:  especially in the areas of overeating, alcohol/drug abuse, and sex addiction.  He has work experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. For over 10 years Dr. Ken consulted with large behavioral health organizations across the United States to help them improve the quality of their Assessments, Treatment Plans, and Progress Notes through the use of the latest electronic documentation technology.  Dr. Ken taught Psychology part-time at the University of St. Thomas in Houston for 10 years, the first graduating UST Psychology student to return to teach in the UST Psychology Department.

In October of 2011, Dr. Ken resigned from his corporate job in Phoenix to found Gratia Plena in Houston.  In addition to his work as a psychologist, Dr. Ken is a facilitator for the Virtus program which is used by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to promote safe environments for children.  He is a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus council 4204.  He has been a trainer of Recovery Coaches for the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Now a grandfather, Dr. Ken has been married for over 30 years.  He and his wife have four adult children and one granddaughter.  They are parishioners at St. Laurence and St. Theresa in Sugar Land.  Over the years Ken has participated in Youth Ministry and Music Ministry in a number of different Catholic communities in Houston, Chicago, and Phoenix.  While living in Phoenix, Dr. Ken volunteered at Maggie’s Place (a nonprofit community of houses of hospitality for pregnant women who are alone or living on the streets), and at Paz de Cristo (a nonprofit organization which runs a meal service for the homeless and working poor). Dr. Ken offices at the Stafford location.

Psychologist Dr. John “Jay” Glynn, Ph.D. is a school psychologist (LSSP) who works with adults, adolescents, and children. He obtained his Ph.D. in School/Child Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He has worked for many years in the past for the Cy-Fair and Fort Bend School Districts, and currently is full-time at The Kinkaid School where he has been for many years. In the past he has taught Psychology for the University of Houston as an adjunct professor. He is also a certified Spiritual Director, trained through the Spiritual Direction Institute at the Cenacle in Houston. He is originally from New Orleans. He and his wife are parishioners at St. Laurence Catholic Church. He offices at the Stafford location.

Spiritual Director Mary Kay Malicki, MS provides spiritual direction services for Gratia Plena and consultation to the Catholic community for Days of Reflection and retreats.  She is a retired Catholic school teacher.  She received her spiritual direction training at the Spiritual Direction Institute at the Cenacle in Houston with specialized training in Italy, and is a member of Spiritual Directors International.  She has 18 years of experience as a spiritual director.  She has a master’s degree in Chemistry and worked in her early years as a research chemist.  She is Catholic and married with four adult children.  She and her husband are parishioners at St. Catherine of Siena. Steven Brown, MS, LSSP, LPA has a license and a wealth of experience in school psychology. He comes to us from the Dallas area, where he worked for several school districts during his career there. After relocating to Houston, he and his wife became parishioners at St. Laurence in Sugar Land. He volunteers at the parish assisting children with disabilities in their faith formation programs. At the parish he also assists with the PACT program, which is a parenting teens ministry. He works under the supervision of Dr. Ken.

LPC Intern Sara Alexander, MA is a native of Bay City (Texas) and has a master’s degree from Houston Baptist University. Her undergraduate degree was from Franciscan University in Steubenville (Ohio). She is supervised by Julie Jones, LPC-S and Dr. Ken and works full-time in the Stafford office. She and her husband have worked with ADORE ministries, and she previously worked as a Catholic school counselor. They have three children and are parishioners at St. Thomas More.

LPC Intern Stephen Bonnette, MS, comes to us from Louisiana with his master’s degree from University of Louisiana at Lafayette and his undergraduate Psychology degree from LSU at Alexandria.  He is an adjunct instructor for San Jacinto College. Stephen is supervised by Nick Lopez, LPC-S and Dr. Ken. He has been involved in Steubenville conferences as a youth counselor and has served in a variety of peer/youth ministry and leadership roles at a number of Catholic parishes. He is Catholic and married with two children. Stephen works out of the Stafford and St. Frances Cabrini offices.

LPC Intern Pui Au Earls, M.Ed. obtained her master’s degree in counseling at the University of St. Thomas and is supervised by Asma Rahim, LPC-S and by Dr. Ken. Pui is originally from Hong Kong, but her college education was in the United States. She is fluent in English and speaks Cantonese and some Mandarin Chinese. She is Catholic and married. She sees clients at the Stafford office and at St. Frances Cabrini.

LPC Intern Derlyn Rhoades, MA is a native of Hawaii, and obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. She is supervised by Dr. Julie Jones, LPC-S and by Dr. Ken. Derlyn works in our Conroe office and is a parishioner at St. Anthony of Padua in The Woodlands.

LPC Intern Armando Tovar, MA, is originally from California. His undergraduate and graduate degrees were from Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. He is supervised by Dr. Julie Jones, LPC-S and by Dr. Ken. Armando works out of the Stafford office. He attends Mass at St. Cyril of Alexandria.

Ivan Navarro, MA is originally from Colombia and so is bilingual. He has dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of St. Thomas in Spanish and Communications, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. His master’s degree in counseling is from Rivier University in New Hampshire. His internship was completed by working at a long-term residential treatment facility for abandoned and abused boys. You may hear him if you tune into Radio Maria. Having just moved back to Houston from New Hampshire, he is working toward LPC licensure in Texas. He works under the supervision of Dr. Ken. He attends daily Mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish.

Business Manager Melanie Burrhus has a degree in psychology from UT Austin and did some graduate work in counseling at the University of Houston. She and her family are parishioners at St. Laurence in Sugar Land but are also involved at St. Faustina parish in Fulshear.

Office Assistant Noelia Valdivieso was born in Bolivia and is fluent in English and Spanish. She and her family are parishioners at St. Laurence (Sugar Land). She is a student at HCC. She works at the Stafford location but handles the operations of the Stafford and St. Cabrini offices. She and her family are active in the Sanacion de la Familia ministry which meets at the Houston Catholic Charismatic Center.
